3 people including a 2-year-old child die in the explosion of an oil tanker in Onyina Nofo in the Ashanti region


Three people died in a tanker explosion in Onyina Nofo, southwestern Ahafo Ano district, Ashanti region.

The driver of the tanker and his assistant, as well as a two-year-old boy who lives in the community, were burned alive in the explosion which occurred this evening, Monday, May 24.

Three other children have not yet been found, according to residents who spoke JoyNews after the accident involving the vehicle bound for Kumasi-Tepa.

Eyewitnesses told Nana Yaw Gyimah JoyNews that the incident happened after the tanker lost its balance, skidded around the village and exploded in the process.

About 7 houses in the community are also set on fire, with most residents homeless.

At least seven people with varying degrees of injuries have been sent to hospital for treatment.

Ghana Police Service and Ghana National Fire Brigade personnel were on scene to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is working to provide relief items to the victims.

Speaking on Newsnight on Joy FM, NADMO Managing Director Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh explained that “we are going to get mosquito nets and blankets.”

“NADMO also comes with mattresses and other things to support them so that we can accommodate them. We are looking at the cocoa sheds, the church and the school building, ”he said.
