How to Commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Central Texas

CENTRAL TEXAS (KXAN) — On Monday marking the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, communities across Central Texas are commemorating the civil rights icon’s legacy with celebrations and festivities.

However, following the latest wave of coronavirus, some communities have had to cancel or repurpose their ceremonies as virtual or remote options. Read on for a breakdown, by community, of the celebrations held in honor of MLK Day.

Austin MLK Day Live Stream

The Austin Area Heritage Council will host a live stream at 10:45 a.m. Monday to recognize King’s legacy and contributions to the American civil rights movement. The event will feature musical performances by Blue Vinyl Crates, speeches by motivational speakers and sentiments shared by community leaders.

With the omicron surge, no on-site participants are allowed. The event can be streamed on Facebook and Youtube.

Pease Park Conservancy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Food Drive

Monday, the Pease Park Conservancy will honor King’s memory with a food donation drive, benefiting the Central Texas Food Bank. The ride will run from 9am to 11am at Pease Park.

Volunteers will help collect canned food from park visitors. To learn how to volunteer, click here.

MLK car parade

Lockhart’s District 1 Pride Neighborhood Association will host its 19th Annual MLK Day Celebration. This year’s event will follow last year’s format of a car parade instead of a march, due to current levels of coronavirus cases.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday on Seawillow Road and MLK Boulevard before heading to Lockhart City Court and Lockhart City Park. Before the march begins, Lockhart Mayor Lew White will read a proclamation, while Pastor and Lockhart City Councilman David Bryant will lead a prayer and balloon release.

Monday MLK March and Celebration begins at 9:30 a.m. with a wreath laying ceremony at the LBJ/MLK Crossroads Memorial. After the ceremony, a march will travel through downtown San Marcos to the Dunbar Recreation Center, located at 801 MLK Drive.
