The zone loaded 30.56 million tonnes of originating freight, marking a growth of 14% compared to the last financial year 2020-21 when it loaded 26.84 million tonnes.
Revenue grew from Rs 2,162 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 2,744 crore in 2021-22, representing a growth of 27%. It is also 2% above the Board of Railways’ target for 2021-2022.
The main goods loaded included coal, iron and steel, cement, fertilizers, petroleum products, automobiles, agricultural equipment and other goods carried in containers.
Southern Railway loaded 13.5 million tonnes of coal in 3,305 rakes in 2021-22, registering a 31% increase over the previous year.
In addition, 0.45 million tons of iron and steel, 2.08 million metric tons of cement, 2.8 million metric tons of indigenous fertilizers and 1.99 million tons of food grains also registered. substantial increases in volume compared to 2020-21.
Automobile loading increased in 2021-22 with 774 rakes, 56% more than 544 rakes in 2020-21.
Southern Railway recorded additional traffic of Rs.2.19 million metric tons registering revenue of Rs 190 crore from new products captured from April to October 2021-2022. The efforts of divisional business development units have helped to create new trades such as automobile, gypsum, construction machinery, carbon black raw materials, edible oil, laterite, paddy, caustic soda, steel coils, granulated copper slag, cement, sugar, petroleum coke, charcoal, soy extracts, legumes, limestone, clinker, sulfur phosphate, harvesters, electric tilers, tractors, bauxite ore, mosquito nets and others.
